Love with the Ghost in Lushan (嶗山鬼戀) (1984) - Cannot find a poster, though existence verified through a title screen. Includes a disembodied human heart flying around killing people! South Korea, Taiwan and Hong King all had some involvement in this production. Firefist of Incredible Dragon - Packaged as a martial arts movie, this is much more a ghostly horror revenge tale. White Hair Devil Lady (1980) - More martial arts than anything else so left off for time being. It may have been filmed in the 80s but not released until later but the jury's still out. Sexual Devil (?) (艷鬼狂情) (late 80s - 1991?) - Release year for this one has varied. There's an IMDb listing but nothing out there to actually verify this one. Oriental Voodoo (1982) - Can't find poster nor the original title.

The Musical Vampire (1992) - One HK database give the release year as 1990. The same guy made another of this type called Ghoul Sex Squad. This is a horror porno (VERY rare for Hong Kong during this time) and thus won't ever be on LB unless they change their policy on adult titles. Mind Fuck (1990) - Directed by: Mah Wu Tu. Lewd Lizard - Some websites give the release date as 1985 but most say 1979 so I'm leaving it off for the time being. This actually looks more like 1993 to me judging by photos I've seen. Horror School (1990 or 1993) - Conflicting release years. The director is a Japanese animator according to IMDb. Gong tau ( Black Magic) (1989) - This is supposedly an animated take on 1975's Black Magic, though I have been unable to verify its existence. Evil's Heart (邪魔化身) (1990) - HK databases call it Devil's Heart but VCD cover says Evil's Heart. This is listed as a 1990 film on HK databases but 1991 on IMDb. Encounter with Hell (1990) - existence verified through VCD release and poster. HONG KONG: (others of note not currently on list) Some of these are tough (*cough* impossible *cough*) to track down. In 2014, the 3D film The House That Never Dies shattered box office records and quickly became the highest-grossing Chinese horror film of all time.īelow are just notes in case I want to look into other titles and so I have a handy list when I start adding more of these. The second is that, right now, horror is one of the most popular and profitable genres in the country.

The first is that Hong Kong director / Shaw Brothers vet Tun Fei Mou petitioned the government to make a historical film there for years, finally got his way and ended up making Men Behind the Sun (1988), which is by far the most disgusting and disturbing movie on this list. There are two amusing points of irony with China. Though the same standards exist today, some wily directors manage to work their way around it using lots of implication. Hell, even dialogue, music and simple sound effects deemed scary were ordered removed from films. It wasn't until the late 80s that genre films were allowed and even then under strict government censorship prohibiting depictions of violence / murder, horror and the supernatural. Though HK and Taiwan were both productive, very few horror films were produced in mainland China during this time due to being banned by the government. The fall of Shaw Brothers in the middle of the decade didn't help matters either as they produced many of the best / craziest / most interesting genre films of the entire decade, like Bewitched, The Boxer's Omen, Seeding of a Ghost and others. Not that some of these aren't highly enjoyable, but it definitely wore out its welcome by the time 1990 rolled around. Vampire, the rest of the decade was dominated by comedies with fantasy and horror elements over serious genre films. Because of the box office success of things like The Happy Ghost and Mr.

The first half of this decade is far more interesting to me personally because there's a wider variety of films dealing with a wider variety of topics and more films done in a serious manner. The good news about this list is that, unlike my previous lists featuring Thai, Indonesian and Mexican horror films, most of these aren't difficult to find and are available in English.

serial killers), I'll probably throw it on here for the time being. but if it contains things like ghosts, monsters, vampires and the like, or human monsters (i.e. Meaning, a film may be heavy on comedy, romance, fantasy, etc. I'm using generic horror tropes as a rough guideline.
